1922 - 2011

Murniek (Murnieks) was born in Vestiena, Latvia (Madona District) in 1922. He is considered one of the fathers of easel painting in Latvia.

He studied painting at the Cesis and Elgava Teacher-Training Institutes from 1938 to 1944. He, also, worked as a teacher in secondary schools in Valmiera and Priekuli including at the Agricultural Technical School from 1944 to 1946. He was accepted at the Riga Academy of Arts. He graduated from the Academy in 1953, completing his well-received diploma work, Winged Helper, under the guidance of V. Kozins. He was the head of the painting studio at the T. Zajkains Academy of Arts in the 1970’s and 1980’s.

Murniek began exhibiting in 1953. Some of his exhibitions included:

  • 1960, 1964 and 1972 in Riga, Lativa—1972 co-exhibited with I. and G. Krollis
  • 1964 One-man exhibit in Liepja
  • 1964 One-man exhibit in Riga through the "Maksla Artist Combine"
  • 1968 One-man exhibit in Vilnius, Lithuania
  • 1968 One-man exhibit in Moscow, Russia
  • 1974 One-man exhibit in Rostock
  • 1978 Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan (accompanied by Marc Chagall)

He was a design artist in the "Maksla Combine" from 1953 to 1982.

He is well-known for his monumental, landscape, still life and figurative paintings working in oil, pastel and tempera.

He is listed on page 215 of Matthew Bown’s, A Dictionary of Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Painters, 1900-1980.
