Mikhail Volodin was born in 1912 to a peasant family in the village of Yastrebovo, Tula province. From 1934-38, he studied at the All Russian Academy of Arts in Leningrad. He then entered the Surikov Moscow Art Institute until he was called to serve as a member of the people’s volunteer corps during World War II. In 1941 he was called back to the Institute to resume his studies where he stayed until he graduated in 1946. He studied at the Master Classes of the Academy of Painting with professors S.Gerasimov, A. Osmerkin, and I. Tchekmazov.
Volodin participated in all important All-Union and republican exhibitions in Moscow and Leningrad from 1942-1987. He is one of the founders of the local national art galleries in the USSR. His works have been exhibited abroad and are found in many private collections throughout the world.
He is listed on page 345 of Matthew Bown's, A Dictionary of Twentieth Century Russian and Soviet Painters.
